In portraiture, suggesting the 'character' is more important than achieving a 'likeness;' both a challenge!'

Portraits (below) in my first painting classes between 2003-2004, with live models, plus assignments for doing self portraits. I've not been eager to do portraiture, however, when engaging this work one addresses all primary painting skills. Now I think of a portrait as a landscape on it's side.

These two portraits were painted in a portraiture class at Pitzer College here in Claremont in 2008, followed by three self-portraits from different moments in my life.

Finally, a few commissions and others that happened when I noticed something like the great shadow cast by a friend's hat . . . or recalled a watercolor I've always loved by Winslow Homer titled The New Novel and had the idea to try to translate that into an oil painting (see below). I do enjoy experimenting.
